Plasma microlensing dynamic spectrum probing fine structures in the ionized interstellar medium

چکیده

Gravitational microlensing has become a mature technique for discovering small gravitational lenses in the Universe which are otherwise beyond our detection limits. Similarly, plasma can help us explore cosmic lenses. Both pulsar scintillation and extreme scattering events of compact radio sources suggest existence $\sim$ AU scale ionized interstellar medium (IISM), whose astrophysical correspondence remains mystery. We demonstrate that by these recorded form wide-band dynamic spectra powerful probe their nature. Using recently developed Picard-Lefschetz integrator Kirchhoff-Fresnel integral, we simulate such well-motivated family single-variable size, strength, shape lens be measured from location cusp point spectral caustics respectively, with combination distances effective velocity known priori or widths interference pattern. Future observations pulsars, may predictable parabolic arc monitoring, most promising ground to apply results deeper insight into fine structures IISM.

The Spectacular Ionized Interstellar Medium of Ngc 55

We present deep Hα+[NII], [SII] (λλ 6716,6731 Å) and [OII] (λλ 3726,3729 Å) images of the highly inclined, actively star–forming SBm galaxy NGC 55, located in the nearby Sculptor Group. Due to its proximity, NGC 55 provides a unique opportunity to study the disk–halo interface in a late–type galaxy with unprecedented spatial resolution. Our images reveal a spectacular variety of ionized gas fea...

Plasma Physics Processes of the Interstellar Medium

This “white paper” is directed to the GAN (galactic neighborhood) theme of the Decadal Survey. We are particularly interested in interstellar medium (ISM) phenomena which can be described by the laws of plasma physics. This is appropriate since nearly all of the ISM phases possess sufficient ionization for plasma behavior. Our advocacy of this position comes from the conviction that many of the...

A Dynamic Interstellar Medium: Recent Numerical Simulations

Recent numerical simulations of the interstellar medium driven by energy input from supernovae and stellar winds indicate that H I clouds can be formed by compression in shock waves and colliding turbulent streams without any help from thermal and gravitational instabilities. The filling factor of the hot phase in these models does not exceed 20–40% at the midplane. The hot gas is involved in a...

Probing Structures of Distant Extrasolar Planets With Microlensing

Planetary companions to the source stars of a caustic-crossing binary microlensing events can be detected via the deviation from the parent light curves created when the caustic magnifies the star light reflecting off the atmosphere or surface of the planets. The magnitude of the deviation is δp ∼ ǫpρ p , where ǫp is the fraction of starlight reflected by the planet and ρp is the angular radius...

Direct spectroscopic evidence for ionized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the interstellar medium.

Long-slit 8-13 micrometers spectroscopy of the nebula around NGC 1333 SVS 3 reveals spatial variations in the strength and shape of emission features that are probably produced by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Close to SVS 3, the 11.2 micrometers feature develops an excess at approximately 10.8-11.0 micrometers and a feature appears at approximately 10 micrometers. These features dis...
